Welcome to our class page!

Autumn 2

This half term our topic is Seasons.

Colour mixing

As part of our work on seasons we have been identifying the autumn colours or red, yellow, orange, green and brown. We had a go at making some of these colours by mixing paint. We learnt that red and yellow make orange, blue and yellow make green, and blue, red and yellow make brown (if you get the right amount of each colour!) We then used our new colour mixing skills to paint our own autumn leaf.

Hartshill Hayes

We really enjoyed our walk to and around Hartshill Hayes. We looked at the different types of trees and learnt the vocabulary 'deciduous' and 'evergreen'. We really enjoyed collecting leaves and brought lots back to school with us!

The Tortoise and the Hare

After our visit from Mrs Varney's rabbit ,Toby, he sent us the story of The Tortoise and the Hare. As a class we have read the story, made a story map and retold it together and worked on creating lots of vocabulary to describe the hare and the tortoise. We have used pictures from the story and put them in to the correct order and we are now beginning to know the story really well.

Place Value

In maths we have been learning about place value of teen numbers. We are really good at knowing that 15 is made of 10 and 5 1s and 26 is 2 10s and 6 1s. We have been briliant number investigators and have been showing how to make numbers using different equipment such as numicon and dienes.

A Special Visitor!

We had a very exciting start to the new half term with a very special visitor! As part of our English work Mrs Varney brought her pet rabbit to school. We asked lots of questions about him, thought about how he would feel, and talked about how he moves. We then looked at videos and photos of a pet tortoise and compared how the tortoise would feel and move.

Autumn 1

The children in 1VH have made a fantastic start to year 1!

This term we have learnt all about My World and Me.

Here are some of the exciting things we have been up to...

Maps

As part of our Topic we have learnt about maps and what they are used for. We looked at keys on maps and learnt how to use them and then made our own of the classroom! Finally we thought about Human and Physical features in our world and went for a local walk to look out for these!

Dogs!

As part of our English learning this term we read the book Dogs, by Emily Gravett. We were very lucky to have a visit from some dogs and their owners. We were able to ask lots of questions and even pet the dogs. They were very friendly.

Our Bodies

We have thought all about our bodies parts and played some body bingo to name them. We then used a special app on the iPads to have a look at the inside of our bodes and the organs we have.

Maths

In maths we have been using lots of apparatus such as Numicon, cubes and numberlines to secure our number bonds to 10 and complete addition and subtraction calculations.

National Poetry Day

For National Poetry Day we looked at poems about Nature. We acted out one of our poems about an acorn growing: starting as seeds underground; growing to shoots; and then finally big trees, swaying in the wind.

We then wrote our own nature poems relating to our senses.

The Invisible String and Paper Dolls

We read the book Paper Dolls by Julia Donaldson and then made our own paper dolls of our friends.

We shared the story of The Invisible String by Patrick Karst and thought about our family, friends, pets and who we felt connected to. We drew their pictures in the love hearts and attached them to our photograph.
