Speaking and Listening

At Nathaniel Newton our English curriculum is underpinned by talk. A key feature of our ‘Talk 4 Writing’ process  is that children internalise the language structures needed to write through ‘talking the text’.

Our progressive teaching sequences include book talk, role play, collaborative discussion activities, orally rehearsing sentences and retelling stories. Staff at Nathaniel Newton help children to articulate their ideas in well-formed sentences, by scaffolding, extending and developing their ideas.

Our classroom environments are rich in vocabulary, where children learn through exploration and collaborative talk.
