New play equipment

This afternoon as part of golden time, the children were very excited to try out the new play equipment which has been installed on the playing field. 

3D houses

During this half term our topic has been 'Once upon a time' where we have been looking at lots of different traditional tales. Within this topic we have been looking at the story 'The Three Little Pigs' and this week the children got to design and create their own 3D houses for the 3 little pigs. The children were able to select from a range of materials to build their 3D house with which included clay, lego, sticks, a net template, junk modelling and marshmallows. The children had to think carefully about how they were going to build their house and what would fix it securely.

Happy Easter Everybody!

We had a lovely last day celebrating Easter from the egg rolling competition to the Easter bonnet parade.

Mad Science Day

We have had a very busy day celebrating mad science day. We all made our very own minibeast out of clay and then we went on a mini beast hunt around the school grounds to see what we could find.  After that we wrote invisible messages using lemon juice and watched the reaction between mentos and coke. Finally in the afternoon we sorted different materials into 'Alive', 'Used to be Alive' and 'Never been alive'.

Road Safety Talk

Today we had a road safety officer come and talk to us about how to keep safe when crossing the road. The children could not only think of lots of ways to keep safe when crossing the road but also where is safe to cross. The children have learnt the simple steps of the road safety code to use when crossing the road.

Science Afternoon

Today we were very lucky to have Miss Green to come and help us with our science afternoon where she taught us all about spiders and their webs. We carried out a scientific experiment to test which material would be the best to stick a spider to the drain pipe.

Topic - Andy Goldsworthy

This week as part of our 'Go Wild' topic we have been learning about the artist Andy Goldsworthy. We have learnt that Andy Goldsworthy is famous for creating 3D sculptures using natural materials which include sticks, stones, sand, snow, icicles, leaves and brightly coloured flowers. We went on a walk around the school grounds to collect lots of natural materials and we then worked in groups to create our own 3D sculptures.

World Book Day

Today we had a great day celebrating World Book Day, click here to see pictures from our day. 

Coventry Transport Musuem

As part of our topic 'Wheels in Motion' Year 2 went to the Coventry Transport Museum. The children were able to look at a variety of new and old types of transport in the museum and learn about what period they were from. As part of the day, we got to learn about 4 different types of Victorian Cycles, the Boneshaker, the Penny Farthing, the Tricycle and the Safety Cycle. We found out who made them, when they were made and what they were made from. Some of us even got to dress up as the inventors. Afterwards we completed a Tranposrt Timeline and we got some free time to explore the different parts of the museum.
The children all really enjoyed themselves and they were a credit to the school.  

YOGA Sessions

This half term Year 2 have had the oppourtunity to take part in a weekly YOGA session. The children have been learning different breathing techniques and looking at different ways to help relax and calm our bodies and mind. 

Safer Internet Day

Today we have been celebrating Safer Internet Day and in Year 2 we have created our own internet super hero's to help remind us how to keep safe online.

P.E - Netball

In P.E this half term the children have been learning lots of different netball skills. The children have been learning the three different passes used in netball; chest pass, bounce pass and shoulder pass. The children have been playing team games by working together to pass the ball from end to the other without dropping the ball.

Topic - Transport 

As part of our 'Wheels in Motion' Topic this half term,  we have been learning all about different types of transport. Within this, the children spent an afternoon carrying out research to find  information all about the first flight. The children used iPads and non-ficiton books to find lots of interesting facts and we created a mind map to show all the facts we had learnt. 

In this topic, the children have also been very busy by:

- gathering and recording data in tally charts and bar charts about the different coloured cars we saw along Vircotia Road. 
- comparing modern day cars to the first car
- comparing transport in England to Mumbai 

I have been so impressed by how much the children have learnt in our topic 'Wheels in Motion' and the children were so excited to share everything they have done in their class assmebly. Well done 2Bi you all did a brilliant job!!!

Maths - Whats the time?

Over the last two weeks we have been learning to tell the time on an analogue clock and we are able to recognise times such as o'clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past. We have also been learning how to tell the time to the nearest five minutes.

Design Technology - Making Menorahs

As part of our 'Lets Celebrate' Topic we have been learning all about the Jewish Celebration Hanukkah. Within this, the children have learnt about the importance of a menorah and this afternoon the children created their very own menorah from a range of different materials. After completing the menorahs, the children evaluated their designs, discussing the parts they thought went well with their menroah and what they would do next time to make it even better. Topic - Cheese Rolling Experiment

As part of our Let's Celebrate Topic we have been learning all about the Gloucestershire Cheese Rolling Festival on Cooper's Hill. The children have learnt all about the festival and even took part in a cheese rolling experiement. The children recorded the results and wrote about what they found out. 

Maths - Money

This week in maths we have been learning about money and how to make amounts using the correct coins. We have also had a shop set up in the classroom where the children had to select two items from the shop. The children then had to add the two amounts together to work out the total amout needed. The children also challenged themselves and worked out what coins they needed to buy the two items. 

Topic - Making a Poppy

Today in our topic lesson we have been learning all about the importance of poppies and what they represent. Lots of children shared their prior knowledge and discussed how it links to Remembrance Day. The children listened carefully to a video explaining all about why poppies are special and why people wear them. The children then had to carefully follow a set of instructions on how to make a Poppy. Click here to see the children with their poppies. 

Topic - Remembrance Day

This week in our topic lessons we are looking at Remembrance Day. The children carefully watched and listened to a video explaining what Remembrance Day is and why it is important. In groups we worked together to write down key words and setences about the different pictures which link to Remembrance Day.  

Maths - 3D Shapes

This week in maths we are looking at 3D shapes and their different properties. Today we went on a shape hunt around the classroom looking for objects which matched the properties of the 3D shapes that we have been learning about. 

Re-telling the story of the Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot 

This afternoon we read the story of Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot. We then worked in groups to sequence and re-tell the story. To help us remember the story we acted out the different parts and pretended to be the different characters.  

Guy Fawkes

As part of our topic 'Lets Celebtrate' we have been looking at the history of Guy Fawkes and why it is celebtrated. The children used a range of different resources to research facts and find information.

Maths - Symmetry

This week in maths we have been developing our understanding of symmetry. We have been looking at symmetry patterns and we even created our own pattern for our partner to copy/reflect. 


New Play Area

On Friday we went and tried out the new play equipment on the field. We all managed to complete the course and cannot wait until we get to have another go!

Maths - Making numbers into different combinations

In maths this week we have been learning how to partition (break up) numbers into tens and ones. We have also been using the cubes to help find different ways of making each number. 

Technology Afternoon

Baking for Macmillion

Today we used our maths knowledge and skills to weigh out ingredients to make shortbread biscuits. We followed the recipe and instructions carefully and took it in turns to add and mix the ingredients together.  On Friday 29th the shortbread biscuits will be on sale to help the school raise money for the Macmillion charity.
