Welcome to 1Bi's class page
Maths - Measuring
This week in maths we have been learning how to measure. We started off by measuring length using non-standard measures. We used cubes, lollipop sticks and sticks of ten to measure the length of different classroom objects. We found out that using non-standard measures was not very accurate. We then learnt how to use a ruler and we measured the lines of different lengths in cm and then drew our own lines to the correct length.
We then moved onto measuring weight using scales. We compared the weight of different classroom objects using mathematical language such a 'lighter, lightest, heavier and heaviest'. Before weighing the objects we had to make sure our scales were balanced so it was fair.
Andy Warhol - Pop Art
This week we have been learning all about the artist Andy Warhol. He became famous for a technique called screen printing where he repeated pictures of celebrities and things that were popular at the time over and over again. He used vibrant colours and changed the colours in each repeated pictures.
His artwork is known as 'pop art' and we have created our own artwork in this style.
Following on from Mental Health Awareness Week, some mornings we have started our day with some mindfulness colouring. While we are colouring in our picture we enjoy listening to music which has helped us to relax and calm our minds ahead of our day of learning.
Safer Internet Day
Today we have been celebrating Internet Safety Day. We started off the day with a special assembly and we listened to the story 'Digiduck and the Magic Castle'. This afternoon we were learning how to keep safe online. We identified adults we trust and if we ever have a problem or get that 'uh oh' feeling, they would be the people we speak to.
We then created a protector badge which will help us to protect ourselves and others when using the interment on our devices.
This week in computing we have been learning how to use an app called Book Creator on the ipads. We have been practising lots of different skills including how to change the background, insert images and text. We learnt how to manipulate the images and text by making it bigger/smaller, rotate them and also position them in different places on the page.
Once we were confident, we then applied these skills to design and create a poster all about old and new toys.
Fire Service Visit
It was a very exciting day for Year One on Friday 28th January as we have a special visit from the fire service. We learnt lots of important things on how to keep safe in case of a fire. We had a talk with the firefighters, practised the 'Stop, Drop and Roll' and even went outside to have a look at the fire engine. As they drove off we heard the siren which was very loud.
After the visit we went back to our classroom to complete our activity sheet from the firefighters. We all had a super morning.
Toy Day - Tommy Top Hat Visit
Today Year One were delighted to host Tommy Top-Hat and his incredible collection of old toys. We spent the whole day playing! It has been great fun and we enjoyed every minute!
Tommy showed us lots of toys from the past including a Humming Top, a Zoetrope, a Jack in the Box, several string puppets, a musical carousel and some trapeze toys. We thought about how the toys worked and looked carefully at their mechanisms. We spent a long time handling, exploring and playing with lots of toys from the past and sharing this experience with our friends. Tommy brought lots of outdoor toys for us to experience such as cup and ball, hoop and stick, skipping ropes, marbles, skittles, hobby horses and hoopla. We also learnt some parlour games from the past. The Minister’s Cat, Poor Pussy Cat, Riddles and What am I? as well as “Paddy from Home” which we learnt to play whilst singing and holding string and chanting “oompa, oompa, oompa”! At the end of the afternoon Tommy showed us how to make some old toys, a Whizzer, a Thaumatrope and a flip book.
Toys - My Favourite Toy
This half term we are learning all about Toys. To kick start our topic we bought in our favourite toy from home and we spent the afternoon painting our toys.
Here are some of our paintings.
Visit from Santa
On our last day of school we had a very special visitor. We couldn't believe that Santa Claus came to visit everyone at Nathaniel Newton!! He asked us if we had all been good this year and if we had made our Christmas List. Santa even bought a delicious chocolate treat for us all.
This afternoon it was Year 1's Christmas Party. We had so much fun dancing and singing to lots of Christmas songs. We played a game of pass the parcel and musical statues.
Snowman Christmas Cards
We have been busy making snowman Christmas cards for our families at home. To get the round snowman shape we used a potato cut in half dipped in white paint and printed it onto some card. Once it was dry we added the features of a snowman and some of us even added a hat and scarf. We then wrote our Christmas message inside.
We have been busy making our very own calendars. We have created a tree which represents all four seasons. First we painted the tree trunk. Next we coloured in the background of each section using wax crayons. Then we used different materials such as paint, tissue paper, glitter and cotton wool to create blossom, leaves and snow.
Christmas Jumper Day
Today we got into the Christmas spirit by coming to school in our festive Christmas clothes and jumpers.
Christmas Tree Decorations
This afternoon we were designing our own baubles to decorate our school Christmas tree. We designed a pattern on the bauble template and then coloured in using wax crayons. We completed our bauble by using different sparkles to make it festive.
This morning we had a special and very exciting visit to school. We watched the pantomime Dick Whittington.
We had so much fun joining in with the songs and actions. We also had a yummy goodie bag to enjoy whilst watching the show.
