Music Workshop

We were really lucky to enjoy a music workshop with Tim Scarborough.  We each played three instruments, the drum, the shakers and the bells (with sticks).  Tim taught us some rhythms through a story all about Sammy the Spider. Here we are on music day :

World Book Day

Our exciting first week back after half term continued on Thursday when we celebrated world book day. We had lots of fun listening to stories and taking part in activities based on different books. The children looked amazing in their costumes and everyone enjoyed a lovely day celebrating the joy of reading.

Mardi Gras!

It has been lovely to have the children back in school this week and we started our new half term in the party spirit! We had 2 fun filled days learning about Mardi Gras and why and how it is celebrated. On Monday we painted and decorated our own masks, learnt to play 'Oh when the saints go marching in' on the kazoo, listened and danced to some Mardi Gras music and decorated our classroom with table runners and paper chains. On Tuesday the fun continued when we were lucky enough to welcome some students from Haddon School of Performing Arts in to our school to teach us some dance moves for the Mardi Gras carnival. We then decorated some pancakes with a choice of strawberries, chocolate chips, lemon juice, maple syrup and strawberry sauce and ate them together before getting ready for the parade. The children looked amazing in their purple t-shirts, necklaces and masks and we were very proud of how well behaved they were on our walk to Michael Drayton and during the parade. We all had lots of fun singing, dancing and playing our kazoos in the street!

Measuring.

This week in Maths (7.2.22 - 11.2.22) we are measuring length. We began by exploring different non-standard measures and had lots of fun measuring objects in our classroom using lollipop sticks, straws, cubes, felt tips and scissors. The children were so good at measuring that Mrs Varney and Miss Phillips even learnt what they measure in scissors, straws and cubes! We have been learning to correctly use the language longest, shortest, smallest, tallest and equal. We learnt to measure accurately and how to compare the lengths of different objects, but discovered it is hard to compare when we all use different objects to measure with and so next we are going to learn to measure in centimetres using a ruler.

Toys posters on Book Creator

We have been exploring an app on the ipads called Book Creator. We have learnt to change the background, add text and add images. We then used these skills to create some amazing posters about toys thinking carefully about where best to place the text, what size and colour it should be and where to place the pictures.

Visit from Tommy Top Hat

We had a fantastic day when Tommy Top Hat came to visit us at school and brought along lots of old toys for us to explore. We learnt all about toys from the past and got to play with marbles, hoops and sticks, cups and balls, puppets and pinball machines, amongst many others. We even got to make our own toys afterwards! After Tommy Top Hat's visit we then did lots of work exploring the differences between toys from the past and those that we play with now. We learnt that most old toys were made from wood where new ones are made of plastic, some old toys were wind up but today toys can work from batteries and lots of other facts. Which other differences can you remember?

Traction Man

1DV loved the story of Traction Man about a toy who goes on adventures around the house wearing lots of different outfits for each adventure. They were very excited when we received a post card from Traction Man asking for the children's help! He needed a new outfit for an adventure he was going to have in the bathroom and asked if we could help him to find a material to make a waterproof hat with. First we explored different materials and made a scientific prediction about which material we thought would be the best.

Next we conducted an experiment by placing each material over a cup and pouring on the same amount of water to test which one was waterproof. The children learnt all about making sure it was a fair test and then recorded whether their prediction was correct or not. Then they wrote a letter back to Traction Man to tell him that the plastic was the best material for him to use. 1DV were amazing scientists and had lots of fun doing this as well!

Toys

The children really enjoyed showing us their toys that they brought in from home. Look at some of the amazing pictures the children drew and painted of their toys!
