Curriculum Intent
At Nathaniel Newton Infant School, we provide all children with a broad, balanced and language rich English curriculum. Through our carefully constructed English Spine of quality fiction, poetry and non-fiction, all children are exposed to a wide variety of high-quality texts, providing a rich source of new vocabulary. Our children are encouraged to develop a lifelong love of reading by immersing themselves into the rich and varied literature offered through imaginative units of work. By using the Talk for Writing approach, we want our children to be able to read and write independently for a variety of audiences and purposes within different subjects. We aim for all of our children to speak and write fluently, so that they can communicate their ideas to others.
Our intent is for the children at Nathaniel Newton to develop their transcription and composition skills through our progressive curriculum, where informal and formal writing opportunities are provided regularly. Underpinning the writing process are the key skills of spelling, punctuation and grammar, which are intertwined in short burst writing activities to practise key focusses. We always provide our children with an interesting and rich starting point that provides the stimulus and content for each text focus, with additional opportunities to enhance and build on their writing through discussions, group work and role-playing.
