Welcome to RIr's Class Page

This is where you will find out what we have been up to over the year in RIr.

A Trip to the Farm

Today we went to Ash End House Children's Farm for our Reception trip to learn about farm animals. First we went on a tractor ride around the farm, then we went in to the Creepy Critters and held Dakota the snake. Next we had lunch and went to see the animals. We fed the goats, ducks and lambs and saw the rabbits and guinea pigs. At the end of the day we got to stroke a day-old chick, had a chick sit on our head and reenacted the story of The Little Red Hen! We had an amazing day and got to take a chicken egg home!

Family Day

We were very excited to be able to invite a parent in to school to enjoy an afternoon of activities together. We made clay sea creatures, paper plate turtles, googly eyed jellyfish, played games, did mindfulness colouring and went outside. We can't wait for next time!

Pirate Day!

To start our new topic off this half-term called 'Oh I Do Like To Be Beside the Seaside' we all came to school dressed as a pirate. We learnt some pirate words, make treasure maps, Jolly Roger flags and listened to some pirate stories.

Jubilee Celebrations

To celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee we had a party on the field. We learnt and performed a class song from the decade 1980s; 'Agadoo' and learnt and performed 'Sing' as a whole school. We made crowns, dressed up as kings and queens, made cakes, flags and learnt lots of facts about the Queen. On the day of the performance we dressed up in red, white and blue to represent the union flag.

Easter

To celebrate Easter we listened to the story, made greeting cards, had a 'roll the egg competition' and did a hat parade for our parents to watch.

Floating and Sinking Experiment

We have been exploring floating and sinking. We looked at different objects and put them in the water to see if they would float or sink. We had a good discussion about whether all heavy things sink and light things float. We were surprised that this wasn’t always what happened.

Searching for the Gruffalo

This week we have been learning all about the Gruffalo. We have been describing what he looks like, making a Gruffalo, and we went for a walk in the woods to search for him or any of the animals we saw in the book. We couldn't find him, but we are keeping a look-out for him!

Drumming and Percussion

We had a musician come to visit and teach us how to play some percussion instruments. We were able to play each instrument and learn how they sound so different from each other. We learnt a story about Sammy the Spider and his friends whilst playing along to their names. We had lots of fun learning about speeding up and slowing down the sounds and also making the instruments louder and quieter.

World Book Day

Today we had a fantastic day dressing up as our favourite book characters. First we had a lovely assembly with Mrs Chappenden about World Book Day. After that we split off into different groups to complete a craft activity. We then sat in a circle and spoke about our favourite books. At the end of the day we did Mystery Story Teller. We had to guess which teacher was behind each of the books! It was very tricky!

Mardi Gras

(Fat Tuesday / Pancake day!)

Here we are getting ready for our Mardi Gras carnival. We had a great two days, enjoying eating and flipping pancakes, making masks, playing kazoos and dancing with the team from Haddon school of dance. We really enjoyed the parade through Hartshill and hope you did too!

Space

This half-term we have been learning all about space and our solar system. We learnt all about the eight planets and about rockets and astronauts. When we came to school one morning we noticed that a rocket had crashed all over the grass. We found out that Spencer the astronaut's rocket had been hit by a meteorite and needed a new rocket, so we designed and built him some.

We had a spooky time at Halloween and dressed up in our scariest costumes!
